American Board of General Practice Board Eligible Status

In 1995, the American Board of General Practice was founded. Also, in that same year, the American Academy of General Physicians was founded. Shortly after that, the American College of General Medicine was founded. The American Academy of General Physicians is the professional association that recognizes and accredits both the American Board of General Practice and the American College of General Medicine. The American Board of General Practice is a certifying organization that certifies excellence in the general practice of medicine and surgery. The American College of General Medicine produces and provides the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine.

There are two pathways, down which a physician may go, to obtain a board certified status with the American Board of General Practice. These pathways are the Previous Experience Pathway and the Standard Primary Pathway. The Previous Experience Pathway of the American Board of General Practice is the pathway utilized by physicians who are challenging the American Board of General Practice by oral examination for immediate board certification. The Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice is the pathway utilized by physicians who are enrolled in the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine and are proceeding through the modules of the General Practice Training Program.

There are two statuses which a physician may obtain when proceeding down the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice. These statuses are Board Eligible Status or Board Certified Status. Generally, Board Eligible Status is obtained, by a physician, prior to obtaining Board Certified Status.

There are several bases upon which a physician can obtain a Board Eligible Status with the American Board of General Practice. These bases are called Beginning Basis, Protem Basis, Interim Basis and Constructed Basis. The American Board of General Practice has different requirements for each of these Bases. In General, the requirements include completion of certain parts of the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine.

Beginning Basis for a Board Eligible Status with the American Board of General Practice

To obtain a Board Eligible Status, on a Beginning Basis, with the American Board of General Practice, the following requirements must be completed: (a) maintenance of an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States, (b) Maintenance of membership, in good-standing, in the American Academy of General Physicians, (c) Admission into the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine, (d) Completion of Module One of the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine, and (e) Submission of a propery completed application for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice, which application must be acceptable to the American Board of General Practice.

Board Eligible Status, on a Beginning Basis, with the American Board of General Practice is for a term of not more than one year.

Protem Basis for a Board Eligible Status with the American Board of General Practice

To obtain a Board Eligible Status, on a Protem Basis, with the American Board of General Practice, the following requirements must be completed: (a) Maintenance of a Board Eligible Status on Beginning Basis with the American Board of General Practice (b) maintenance of an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States, (c) Maintenance of membership, in good-standing, in the Professional Member Class of the American Academy of General Physicians, (d) Admission into the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine, (e) Completion of Module One and Two of the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine, and (f) Submission of a properly completed application for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice, which application must be acceptable to the American Board of General Practice.

Board Eligible Status, on a Protem Basis, with the American Board of General Practice is for a term of not more than six months plus any time the applicant has remaining on his/her Board Eligible Status, on a Beginning Basis. Board Eligible Status, on a Protem Basis, with the American Board of General Practice can be extended for an additional six months be completing a succeeding module of the General Practice Training Program. The extension of a Board Eligible Status, on a Protem Basis, is six months for each module completed after module two.

Interim Basis for a Board Eligible Status with the American Board of General Practice

To obtain a Board Eligible Status, on an Interim Basis, with the American Board of General Practice, the following requirements must be completed: (a) Maintenance of a Board Eligible Status on a Protem Basis with the American Board of General Practice (b) maintenance of an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States, (c) Maintenance of membership, in good-standing, in the Professional Member Class of the American Academy of General Physicians, (d) Admission into the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine, (e) Completion of Entire Module Section (Modules one through twelve) of the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine, and (f) Submission of a properly completed application for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice, which application must be acceptable to the American Board of General Practice.

Board Eligible Status, on an Interim Basis, with the American Board of General Practice is for a term of not more than one year plus any time the applicant has remaining on his/her Board Eligible Status on a Beginning Basis and his/her Board Eligible Status on a Protem Basis.

To obtain a Board Eligible Status, on a Constructed Basis, with the American Board of General Practice, the following requirements must be completed: (a) Maintenance of a Board Eligible Status on an Interim Basis with the American Board of General Practice (b) maintenance of an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States, (c) Maintenance of membership, in good-standing, in the Professional Member Class of the American Academy of General Physicians, (d) Admission into the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine, (e) Successful Completion of, and Graduation from, the Entire General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine, and (f) Submission of a properly completed application for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice, which application must be acceptable to the American Board of General Practice.

Board Eligible Status, on an Interim Basis, with the American Board of General Practice is for a term of not more than one year plus any time the applicant has remaining on his/her Board Eligible Status on a Beginning Basis, his/her Board Eligible Status on a Protem Basis and his/her Board Eligible Status on an Interim Basis.
